Holiday Giving Program
“Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others”. Booker T. Washington
Show the holiday spirit in 2013 by assisting a family in need through the North Kingstown Holiday Giving program. Every year the requests increase and the ability of the town to meet the requests of families in need depends on the availability of donated gifts. Please help the Department of Senior and Human Services help those in need by calling 268-1579 weekdays from 9AM-3PM by December 6, 2013. Families in need of assistance should contact the Holiday Giving Office by December 2, 2013. During the holidays many churches and organizations provide many programs for the needy, to best serve all residents, North Kingstown Senior and Human Services tries to communicate with local churches and organization to prevent duplication of services and programs.
There are two significant parts to the North Kingstown Holiday Giving Program. The Thanksgiving program consists of providing meals or food gift cards to needy families through the North Kingstown Food Pantry. Those in need should complete request forms and return them to the North Kingstown Food Pantry or the North Kingstown Senior and Human Services Department by November 20, 2013. The Food Pantry will coordinate requests and distribution of food baskets to North Kingstown families.
Anyone wishing to donate grocery store gift certificates or money for the Thanksgiving dinners may mail the certificates and checks directly to the North Kingstown Food Pantry, 445 School Street, North Kingstown, RI 02852.
Non-perishable items for the North Kingstown Food Pantry can be dropped off at the Pantry on School Street, or at the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, North Kingstown Town Hall, North Kingstown Town Hall Annex, North Kingstown Police Department, North Kingstown Senior and Human Services “Beechwood”, Wal-Mart, Dave’s Market on Tower Hill Road and Gate Road locations, as well as St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wickford Baptist Church, United Methodist Church and St. Bernard R.C. Church.
The Holiday Giving Program focuses on providing gifts for children in families experiencing hardship and is unable to provide the gifts themselves. Families must meet certain eligibility guidelines and an in-person interview is required. The program is driven by the generosity of individuals, families and local businesses who anonymously “adopt” families in need. Matching families with donors and getting the gifts to recipient families requires tremendous coordination. Those who want to adopt families in need should call the Holiday Giving Office at
268-1579 weekdays from 9AM-3PM beginning October 7, 2013. Donors will receive only age and gender appropriate “wish lists” from the adopted families. Donor and recipient personal information is strictly confidential.
Gifts must be delivered unwrapped to the North Kingstown Senior and Human Services, 44 Beach Street, North Kingstown, RI 02852 by December 11, 2013. Donations of wrapping paper and grocery store certificates are always welcome.
Residents wishing to help the Holiday Giving Program do not have to adopt a family; instead they may wish to donate gift certificates of any kind, including food or money to purchase gift certificates. Certificate donations for food or gifts can be dropped off at the North Kingstown Senior and Human Services, 44 Beach Street, North Kingstown RI 02852, or you may mail it to Holiday Giving Program, c/o North Kingstown Senior and Human Services, PO Box 313, North Kingstown, RI 02852 through December 11, 2013.
