MISSION
STATEMENT
The mission of the
Department of Public Works (DPW) is to maintain and improve Town facilities and
infrastructure through cost effective management and forward-thinking asset
prioritization. In order to fulfill its mission the DPW strives to provide responsive and
high quality public service through efficient departmental procedures, increased value to
the customer, and positive inter-organizational communications.
Divisions:
Administration
is comprised of the Department Director, Facilities Project
Manager, and administrative support personnel. Division responsibilities include the
overall operation of the DPW including policy and personnel decisions, purchasing,
budgeting, research, supervision, record keeping, and customer service to residents.
Moreover, the Facilities Project Manager is responsible for the preparation,
implementation, and supervision of major School and Town capital projects.
Highway
is responsible for maintaining and improving the Town's
infrastructure (roads, dams, drainage, bridges), street sweeping, snow plowing, bulky pick
up, tree trimming, and brush cutting, cleaning of catch basins, sign making, and other
tasks that involve heavy and light equipment.
Engineering
is headed
by the Town Engineer and staffed by two engineering assistants and a senior
clerk.. The Engineering Division is responsible
for subdivision review and inspection, highway and drainage improvement design, plat map
updates, computer aided design (CAD), bid specification
preparation and project management, deed and title search, and customer service.
Furthermore, Engineering works closely with consulting engineers on road design, updating
the Highway Paving Program, aerial photos, and bridge inspections.
The North Kingstown
Transfer Station
(NKTS)
is the heart and soul of the Town's
Solid Waste
program.
Recycling:
Blue stream recyclables (plastic jugs, glass
bottles, steel/tin cans)
should be
separated from
green stream
recyclables (paper, light cardboard, corrugated cardboard--flattened), etc...
Facilities and Grounds
is responsible for
the maintenance and improvement of all Town buildings, grounds, athletic facilities, Town
Beach, play grounds, and parks. Division personnel are responsible for custodial
care of Town Hall as well as other Town buildings. Town festivals and tournaments
are periods that highlight the division's expertise and efficiency. In addition, the
division supplements Winter snow plowing efforts.
