Convertor for Digital TV Reception Now Available
On February 17, 2009, all television signals will be switched to a
digital broadcast signal. Beginning, February 18, 2009, if
you have a television set that receives it over the air
programming with antennas, you will no longer get a
picture. These sets will require a converter box to pickup
a television signal. Televisions that are hooked up to a
cable or satellite broadcasting system will not need a
converter box.
Why the switch? Under a law passed by Congress in
2005, all free local broadcasters are required to turn off
their analog channels and broadcast exclusively in the
digital format. February 17, 2009 is D-Day.
What is Digital Television (DTV) anyway? DTV is a
new type of broadcasting that produces a dramatically
clearer picture and sound. DTV can also offer multiple
program choices and better service to significantly enhance
closed captioning. DTV will also enable broadcasters to
provide several channels of programming at once
(multicasting) and will free up the traditional analog
channels to be used for public safety uses by police and
fire services.
As part of the switch to the digital system, the
National Telecommunications and Information Administration
is making $ 40.00 coupons available to person who need them.
The converter boxes are expected to cost between $
50 and $ 70 each and will be available at most of the
nation’s major electronics stores. More than 33 million
coupons are being made available to the general public. Two
coupons per household have been allocated for the switch.
Seniors and persons in any age group that need
converter coupons can obtain them in several ways.
1)
If you have access to a computer you can apply by logging on
towww.dtv2009.gov.
2)
You can call the 24 hour hot line to request an application
at 1-888-388-2009 then mail the coupon application to P.O.
Box 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000
According to the Neilsen Corporation, approximately 14.3
million of the 113 million television sets will need a
converter box.

The outrageously prodigious comic and musical soul of the 1930s
Harlem lives on in this rollicking, swinging, fingers-snapping
revue that is still considered one of Broadway’s best. The
inimitable Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame
during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk dives along
Lenox Ave, rent parties, stride piano players and that jumpin’
new beat, Swing. Lunch will be at Bistro by the Sea. Luncheon

Trip Participants:
Many individuals have asked about the policy of tipping
drivers on day trips and waitstaff at restaurants. Tips are
not included in the cost of the trip; the Town of North
Kingstown’s policy prohibits tipping of drivers. If you
would like on an individual basis to tip the driver, an
envelope will be passed around by the chaperone on the bus.
This donation is by choice. The chaperone will be more than
happy to collect the donations and give them to the driver.
At restaurants, an 18% gratuity is already included in the
price of the meal; therefore, it is not necessary to tip the
waitstaff.
